WatchGuard Technologies was founded in 1996 and went public in 1999, right at the height of the late nineties technology bubble. The company was acquired by private equity firms Francisco Partners and Vector Capital in 2006. At this time, the company began a four-year re-architecture of its platform, moving away from proprietary chipsets and adopting commercial off-the-shelf silicon (i.e., Intel Security and Freescale Semiconductor). WatchGuard has also fully embraced the use of third-party security software to power its UTM and NGFW appliances.
